Lars Coenen
Lars Coenen is Associate Professor in Economic Geography at CIRCLE with a particular interest in the geographies of innovation. His PhD thesis (2006) entitled 'Faraway, so Close! The Changing Geographies of Regional Innovation', contains various comparative studies across different industries and regions to investigate how local and global knowledge is combined in a productive nexus of learning processes at the regional level. At present his research focus is converging around the notions of regional innovation systems and the spatial dynamics of socio-technical transitions in relation to sustainable technologies. In his analyses Lars seeks to compare the emergence and diffusion of radical innovation in areas such as biofuels and passive housing across different territorial contexts. In 2008-2009 he also worked for the Dutch Knowledge Centre for Transition at TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. Lars’ teaching activities cover the fields of innovation management, innovation systems and sustainable innovation.
Research Projects
My research activities are part of CIRCLE Research Area 2, "Studies of
regional innovation systems". I am particularly interested in studying
the spatial aspects of learning processes between actors in an
innovation system (firms, research institutes, universities, the public
sector). What determines the relative importance of localized learning
processes versus non-localized learning processes? In answering this
question, the point of departure is to compare regional innovation
systems from a sectorally and territorially contextualized perspective.
Thus, comparisons are made between the spatial learning dynamics of
clusters in different industries and regions. So far, my research has
mainly been concentrated on clusters in the Nordic countries and Canada,
encompassing traditional industries such as food as well as
science-based industries such as biotechnology.
