Ana Mafalda Madureira
My name is Ana Mafalda Madureira. I have been admitted as a PhD candidate in February 2009, at the Department of Spatial Planning, at Blekinge Tekniska Högskola. I am also a researcher at CIRCLE.
I did my bachelor in Geography from the University of Oporto, in Portugal, and did a Master in European Spatial Planning at Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, in Sweden.
I am currently working on my PhD that questions how urban planning is used in a context of a city under socio-economic restructuring. I am particularly interested in the use of urban planning within commodification projects in de-industrialized neighborhoods. Changes occurring in western economies and societies find a particular echo in urban areas, as privileged man-made and society influenced landscapes. The processes of socio-economic changes now undergoing in western countries are creating a new cycle of accelerated transformation of the urban areas. For urban planners and geographers as well as other researchers concerned with urban space, this opens up possibilities for analysing how these changes are reflected in the use of the urban space, which conflicts develop consequently and how their won disciplines can contribute to make sense of these changes.
I have earlier presented a paper at the Uddevalla Symposium, that resulted from a brief study I conducted of the commuting patterns within the Malmö labor-market region and how the changes in these patterns was altering the predominant economic function of the municipalities within this labour-market region. I have also been involved in a small research project for Vinnova, where I researched how the European Union’s Structural Funds could be used to promote innovation-related activities within the EU space. Later I worked as a research assistant involved in a EU project entitled MERIPA- Methodology for European Regional Innovation Policy Assessment.
