Open Source Software (OSS) contributes with about 2.2% to world GDP and is an important driver of the economy. In a study published earlier this year researchers Knut Blind and Torben Schubert looked at OSS and its macroeconomic impact.

OSS has spurred hopes of new potentials for economic growth but also fears of losing competitive advantages by causing spillovers to competing firms or economies. Knut Blind and Torben Schubert found that strengthening the OSS skill base as well as the incentive to invest in Open Source Software is the way forward.

The latest CIRCLE policy brief explains both challenges and fields of action for policy.
